How can Busy Things help children celebrate the Olympic Games?

The Olympic Games is one of the one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. We are talking, after all, about 200 countries taking part in a 2-week long sports day! It brings the world together and celebrates sport in its many forms.

Sports focus

Our favourite sports activity

Talking about the Olympic Games is an easy way to talk about sports, and to get children to discuss their favourites.

Why not ask the children which event they would compete in if they were to take part in the Olympic Games. You could chart the results using Busy Things’ ‘Our favourite sports’ activity.

Country focus

To get in the competitive spirit, each class could adopt a country (other than Great Britain) to support. You could choose these either from the countries that you think will perform the strongest or from ones where your school has particular links.

Once your focal countries have been selected, your class’s task is to research the country you’ve been given and find out which sports it’s particularly strong at.

Scope of the Games

Some countries of the world activity

To understand the enormity of the Olympic Games, you could look at where the countries participating are on a map, globe or on our very own ‘Countries of the world’ activity.

Flag activity

Finally, there are the flags. Some children (usually the football fans) already have an extensive knowledge of country flags; other may know only the flags of the countries they’ve visited.

Our new activity, ‘Map of world flags (Olympic edition)’, developed specifically for the Olympic Games, is great for improving flag recognition.
