Free Phonics Presentation to Share With Parents
Now that all of your Foundation Stage children are settled in class and learning the school routines, we know Reception teachers everywhere will be starting to teach phonics in earnest. If you’ve started already, we hope it’s going well!
Recruiting your pupils’ parents to help in the process, so that the children engage in reading and get to practise their new skills at home, is vital as discussed in our earlier blog, “Helping Parents Provide Phonics Support”. There are only so many hours in a day and with 30 plus children to teach and support, that dedicated one-to-one time at home can be a real game-changer! Most parents are invested in their child’s development, so although they’re busy, they won’t mind spending 10 or so minutes a day on phonics.
To bring them on board and help them understand their role in their child’s reading journey, it’s best to invite them into school for a phonics workshop. They won’t have learnt to read using phonics themselves, so they’ll undoubtedly have lots of questions. In our earlier blog, we mentioned how useful a presentation is to explain what phonics is, where it comes from and how it’s taught. In fact, we think it’s so important, we’ve gone away, done the groundwork for you and created one to save you some time!
What’s in the phonics presentation?
In the presentation, we’ve included sections on the following:
- Phonics – what it is
- Phonics – its background
- The stage of phonics learning
- What a typical phonics lesson looks like
- Phonics terms
- How they, as parents, can support their child as they learn phonics
- The phonics screening check
- Frequently asked questions
How you use the presentation is entirely up to you. You can:
- run with it as it stands, and supplement it with details of the phonics scheme your school uses, or
- cut and paste from it to produce your own presentation.
Want to see our phonics activities?
As you can see we know what’s what when it comes to phonics, and have activities and a resource maker to help in the teaching of it as well as our presentation.
Activities
Busy Things has phonics activities that will take your children from learning the first letters right through to Year 2.
There are plenty of fun and engaging activities to practise on. They reinforce the children’s understanding whilst they play!
Resource maker
Our resource maker allows you to make tailored resources for your class. You can produce pdfs to support the children’s letter formation, create games that improve their speed or target phonemes they struggle with, and later on, even give them practice for their screening check.
All of our phonics activities are included as part of our annual subscription. If you would like to take a look, we’d be happy to arrange a 28-day free trial of the full resource for you. Just click here to get started!
You can play our games and activities on tablets, desktop computers, laptops and whiteboards. They are great for independent, group and whole-class use.
