How to help your child to love drawing

Drawing is such a brilliant skill for children to develop, but it’s easy for kids (and adults!) to feel frustrated or self-critical at times. That’s why it’s so important to focus on building their confidence, encouraging creativity, and above all, helping them enjoy the process!

Here are our top tips for inspiring your little artists to discover the joy of drawing!…

1. Just Have a Go!

Remind your little ones that when it comes to drawing, there’s no such thing as right or wrong – it’s all about enjoying the process! Make sure you’re modelling a positive attitude toward your own drawing skills too! They’ll follow your lead, so show them that having fun and giving it a go is what really matters.

2. Explore Different Styles

Introduce them to different forms and styles of drawing – think cartoons, abstract art, doodling, or realistic, life-like sketches. Help them see that art isn’t just about making things look “real” but about expressing themselves in whatever way feels right to them.

3. Practice Makes Progress

Improvement comes with practice, and it takes time! Encourage them to keep drawing, celebrate every little improvement, and remind them that perseverance is the key to unlocking their artistic potential. It’s all about progress, not perfection.

4. Try Out New Drawing Techniques

Experiment! Encourage your child to play around with different materials and drawing techniques. Try pencils, coloured pencils, crayons, markers, or even chalk. Mixing it up will help them find what they enjoy most and keep things exciting.

5. Observe the World

Help your child to look closely at the world around them. Notice the texture of a leaf, the shape of clouds, or the way light creates shadows. Observing these little details will really help sharpen their drawing skills and bring their artwork to life

6. Celebrate Every Effort

Be their biggest cheerleader! Point out what you love in their drawing—whether it’s a bold use of colour or a clever detail. Encouraging words can make a huge difference in boosting their confidence.

7. Draw Together

Grab some pencils and join in the fun! Drawing together is a fantastic way to spend quality time together and share ideas. Remember, no two drawings will ever be the same, and that’s the beauty of it. Show them you’re happy to have a go too!
