NEW Phonics Screening Check Resources Maker!
With the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check coming up in June, we have created a brand NEW resource to help you to get children ready. Use our Phonics Screener Resource Maker to create custom mock-tests and phonics screening practice games at the push of a button!
What is the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check?
The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short progress-check to assess if children are on track with their reading. Incorporating both real and nonsense words, the test aims to see if children can use their phonics skills to decode words that they have and haven’t seen before.
Check out our blog Everything you need to know about the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check for a complete guide.
Preparing for the Phonics Screening Test
Use our NEW Phonics Screening Check Resources Maker to create practice sheets. The layout options available give you the ability to create mock-tests that mimic the style of the real tests so that children can get used to the format. You can also choose to include a marking sheet.
Whether you’re looking for general phonics screener practice or more focused revision on a particular set of sounds or words, you can tailor the content exactly to your needs. Here are a few of the content options:
- Auto generate a whole set of words at the push of a button! Keep pushing the button and you’ll keep getting whole new sets of practice words!
- Want to change a word within the auto-generated set? You can choose to pick alternatives for individual words within the set.
- Only want a certain selection of consonant-vowel combinations? No problem e.g. you could choose to just practise CC-V-C words.
- You can choose to enter you own words or even whole sets of words.
There are many options! If there is something you are looking for do ask us the comments as it may well be an option!
Fun practice activity ideas for the Phonics Screening Check:
Another custom option in our Phonics Screener Resource Maker is the ability to choose how many words to print per page and whether to include the monster icons. This is ideal if you want to create a game to revise for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Test. Here are a couple of activity ideas:
- Get the Monsters. Print and cut out a selection of words without the monster icons on. Children need to read the words out loud and then decide which ones are real and which are nonsense. You could have a little monster pen for the pseudo-words to live in. Children could then draw their own monster icons that they think match with the name.
- Hunt the words: Print out a set of words, hide them around an area. Children have to bring them back to you as quickly as possible, reading them to you when they bring them back.
The Phonics Screening Check Resources Maker is just the latest addition to the Busy Things Phonics Resource Maker area, it’s getting pretty big now! You can make many custom activities and worksheets for all phonics phases, all of which could you utilised to revise for the Phonics Screening Check.
Here’s one idea for using our Graphemes Resource Maker:
Crazy Alien challenge: Ask children to draw/make aliens. They then need to give them names by assembling a selection of graphemes together. Experiment with different arrangements, decoding/reading the words as they go. You can use our Graphemes Resource Maker to print out your custom selection of grapheme tiles.
